First of all, let me make this clear, Dustin Johnson is at fault. The PGA made it clear that ALL of the 1200 or so sandy deposits left by Pete Dye are bunkers and players should not ground their clubs. Just like baseball players should know the ground rules at every ballpark they play at, golfers need to know the ground rules too. If there is any question, there was a rules official with him he should have asked. That said, the PGA gets some of the blame here as well. If you are going to consider every sand deposit-either inside or outside the gallery ropes- bunkers, then don't let the paying public stand in or walk through them. Rope em off... that way everybody knows. And if you don't have enough rope to rope off 1200 or so bunkers...then change the rule! Another thing. Sure, Johnson should have asked, but the PGA official walking with that group could have volunteered the information, especially in that situation. Of course, I'm assuming the PGA official on the course knew it was a bunker!!
When Derrek Lee invoked his no-trade priveleges and turned down a trade to the Angels, most of us scratched our heads, shrugged our shoulders and wondered why would a competitor not want to compete for a team in the pennant race. Hehasn't said much more than he wants to finish the season in Chicago. We can speculate at the reasons, but the thing that jumps out at me is these guys getting sent here and there any sport are PEOPLE. Most of them are married people. some are married people with children and--like Lee--some are married with kids, one of whom is coping with a serious medical condition. Did anybody see Joe Saunders reaction when he was traded in the Dan Haren deal? He cried like a baby. Professional athletes are allowed to set down roots if they want to. They are allowed to become members of a community if they want to. And when we spout off about the Cubs needing to trade Ted Lilly or the Brewers better trade Fielder before he walks, remember, we are affecting peoples lives. Sure, they know its a part of the profession and some choose to move on their own(i.e LeBron), but the constant trade talks and then the eventual trade impact peoples lives and when a player says, no I'd rather stay home..it's not a bad thing.
Tonights Lebron James hour long announcement is highly unusual, but I'm fine with it. LeBron James is one of the few superstars who can actually say they are bigger than the sport itself. Tiger was- probably still is. Michael Jordan certainly was. Brett Favre to some degree has that attraction as well. Why is Lebron doing an hour long show? Simply because he can and you know you will tune in. Putting the showbiz aside...if LeBron's true goal is to win championships, then he should select the Chicago Bulls. With the addition of Carlos Boozer, the Bulls have most everything covered except a pure shooter. Miami, with Wade and Bosh, would be his second best choice. Actually, New Jersey has some decent player LeBron could play well with. The Knicks signed Stoudamire, but he and LeBron does not a championship make. Cleveland has an aging Antwan Jamison and little else. He should pick the Bulls...but he will probably pick the Heat.
Watch the drama unfold..you know you will!!
