03:03 PM on Friday May 09, 2008This could be a familiar sight the rest of the season for the Brewers in the opponents' run column. Last 6 games: 7-6-8-3-6-7 with an average of over 6 runs per game. I don't see how that ends. Every five days, Ben Sheets will throw a solid outing (assuming he stays healthy) and Jeff Suppan should get back to his regular outings of 6 innings and 3 runs. Beyond those two guys, actually 1.5, yikes! Carlos Villanueva has a nice 6.46 ERA in 39 IP. He hasn't won since his first start this season and has allowed 10 homers and 51 hits. His brief history shows he can turn it around, but I don't see it. Manny Parra has struggled to the tune of a 5.86 ERA, has 17 walks and 38 hits in 27.2 IP. Wow! I thought Parra was better and he's the only guy I could see turning it around in the rotation. Dave Bush is hovering at a nice, robust 6.98 ERA in 5 starts that features 14 walks, 6 homers, and 32 hits in 29.2 IP. Lost cause in my opinion. The major problem is the Brewers really have no alternatives. Jeff Weaver is down at Triple A Nashville (3.75 ERA in 2 starts in case you care) and Chris Narveson is also down there. Those two are the only viable options even. That's it. So what now is the question. Do you trade one of the outfielders (Hart, Cameron, Gwynn, Dillon, Kapler) for a pitcher? I don't see that because the attractive guy in that list is Hart and the Brewers are hanging on to him. The only way the Brewers can succeed is to outscore teams. Sounds funny right now, but this team is capable of doing that. Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun can carry a team for a month and Hart, Bill Hall and J.J. Hardy can turn it around. Again, more lineup discussion only with the Brewers now instead of the Cubs. Mike Cameron hitting 2nd will kill most rallies. He already has 13 strikeouts in 38 at-bats, well on his way to 140 or above. Ned Yost needs to make that change right away and move Hart up. When the season started I had the Brewers a close second to Chicago, but no longer. I do believe the Cardinals can hang around and will challenge the Cubs more than the Brew Crew. The summer could be a long one for all you Brewer fans. Jason Lamar - jlamar@espn1380.com Back |
