Must-win matchups coming up in NIC-10

Oct 01, 2012 -- 4:13pm

The week six matchup against Harlem and Hononegah may have been one of the most anticipated of the season, after Hononegah and Boylan in week one, and the upcoming meeting of Boylan and Auburn in the final game of the regular reason.

Hononegah head coach Tim Shugroue also says it was the biggest game on the Indians’ schedule since week one, at least at this point. “We were excited to have this opportunity to play a really good football team and see what we can do.  And it was great to see the kids step up and play so well”, said Shugroue.

With running back Alex Martin leading the Indians to a 28-18 victory over Harlem this week, Hononegah moves to 5-1 and second in the standings, as well as secures their place in the playoffs. Harlem sits directly below them at 4-2.

Under Harlem and Hononegah, there are four teams in the NIC-10 that have 3-3 records and will try be trying to accrue two more wins to make it into the playoffs; the Freeport Pretzels, Guilford Vikings, Belvidere Bucs and Auburn Knights.

So who has the most challenging road ahead in the final three weeks?

The Freeport Pretzels have dropped pivotal games to Belvidere and Belvidere North in the last two weeks.  They face Auburn, Hononegah and Harlem to finish the season.

After the Guilford Vikings defeated Belvidere 42-14 in week five, they fell to Auburn last week.  They will look for two wins against Hononegah, Harlem and Jefferson (0-6).

Belvidere meets East (1-5), Boylan (6-0) and Belvidere North (2-4).
