As Prep Corner makes the transition from football to basketball, you may notice some familiar names in the highlights. A few of the standout players from the gridiron are taking the basketball court in the NIC-10 this season.
The Boylan Titans were still playing football in Lake Zurich on November 10th. Less than two weeks later, quarterback Brock Stull and running back Demarcus Vines took on the positions of forward and guard, respectively, for Titans’ varsity basketball. Stull is a strong shooter for Boylan, putting up 16 points in the season opener against West Chicago. Peter Cimino also makes the switch from football to basketball this winter.
Harlem quarterback Justin Vanwambeke returns to Huskies basketball at guard this season, after breaking the school’s record for most assists last year. He averaged over 15 points and five rebounds and made first-team all-conference in 2011.
D.J. Mack, who caught three touchdown passes (and earned Prep Corner player of the week honors) against Belvidere during football season, gets the start at forward for Guilford basketball this year.
Kane Steger, the Belvidere Bucs’ leading receiver this season, finished the 2011 basketball season averaging 12.5 points and five rebounds per game. This is Steger’s fourth season as a varsity starter for Bucs basketball. Belvidere is expected to be near the top of a very evenly-matched conference.
Which of these players with be the difference makers for their teams on the court?
