Matchups to watch in the NIC-10, Week 2

Dec 07, 2012 -- 6:10pm

Hononegah (1-1) @ Jefferson (0-2) – Game of the Week
Friday, December 7

Hononegah may have fallen to a second-half rally by a tough Belvidere team in their conference opener last week, but they came back in a big way with a 47-31 win over the Auburn Knights the next night.  Senior guard Jacob Doyle had 16 points and five assists against Auburn, but the story of the game was the Indians’ outstanding defense.

Hononegah takes on Jefferson, who started the season 4-0 in tournament play, but are still winless in the NIC-10, after falling to Auburn and East last week.  Despite the 0-2 start, there have been some offensive bright spots for the J-Hawks.  Sophomore Antoine Pittman put up 26-points, the most from either team, against Auburn last week.

Harlem (1-1) @ Auburn (1-1)
Friday, December 7

Harlem’s Robert Smith scored 14 points against Belvidere North last Friday, eight of them coming in the fourth quarter, to lead the Huskies to a one-point win (39-38) win over the Blue Thunder.  But like Hononegah, the Huskies’ one conference loss came at the hands of the Belvidere Bucs.  The Bucs outscore Harlem 76-50 last Saturday.  Justin VanWambeke accounted for over half of the Huskies’ total points, putting up 26 points and 7 assists, and going 10-11 at the line.

In week one, Auburn was defeated by Hononegah, but rode a 22-point fourth quarter to get the 65-60 win over Jefferson.  Sophomore guard Laytwan Porter had a 22 points on the night, including a 3-pointer in the final minute of the game, to secure the lead for the Knights.

Boylan (2-0) @ East (2-0)
Friday, December 7

The Boylan Titans take on the East E-Rabs in the only undefeated matchup of the weekend.  The Titans are 5-0 overall, and took care of their first two conference opponents easily in week one, defeating Freeport 65-33, and Guilford 79-53.  Boylan has a strong shooting core, with Brock Stull (F), who put up 23 points with two 3-pointers against Guilford, and Ben Grygiel (C) who had 11 points in both games last weekend. Jimmy Bridges (C) also put up double-digit points in the Titans’ conference opener against Freeport.

But the Titans face the East E-Rabs, and maybe more importantly, Isaiah Box.  Box, our Prep Corner player of the week, put up 20 points against Jefferson, and 22 points against Freeport; 13 of those points coming in the third quarter, and leading the E-Rabs to a 64-44 win over the Pretzels. The 6’1’’ senior is also 18-27 at the line and averages over five assists per game.  The Titans will also have to contend with Austin Young, who had a double-double  against Collins Academy in the first week of the season.
