What to watch in the NIC-10 this weekend

Dec 14, 2012 -- 5:22pm

Hononegah (3-1) at East (2-1) – Game of the Week
Friday, December 14 at 7:00 p.m.

Hononegah enters this week’s game at East with an overall 6-2 and sitting only behind Boylan in the standings.  The Indians have won their last three games, including two fairly close victories over Jefferson and Boylan.  But it was their impressive defense against Auburn, and the 52-47 win over the Titans last week that put Hononegah on the top of the power rankings in week two. Despite winning their last three games, the Indians are beatable.  Belvidere outscored the Indians 74-66 in the conference opener, with five different players scoring over 10 points for the Bucs.

East, who is 5-2 overall, fell to Boylan last week.  The game, which was anticipated to be close, went down to the wire with a final score of 73-70.  East’s offense was once again lead by their top shooters, Austin Young (24 points, 4-4 from the line) and Isaiah Box (18 points, 0-2).  Hononegah’s defense will need to contain Box and Young if they’re to move to 4-1 in the NIC-10 this week.

Guilford (1-2) at Auburn (2-1)
Friday, December 14 at 7:00 p.m.

The Auburn Knights, who have been mentioned as conference contenders this season, only have one loss to Hononegah in week two.  But their two wins haven’t exactly been convincing.  The Knights defeated Jefferson (who got their first win in the NIC-10 against Belvidere North this week) and Harlem 61-53 last week.  A majority of the Knights’ shooting has come from seniors Tramel Rideout and Quavion Scott, and sophomore Laytwan Porter, who put up 22 points against Jefferson.

In the first upset of the season, the Guilford Vikings banked their first win against conference favorite Belvidere last week.  The previous week, the Vikings were dominated in a 70-47 loss to Belvidere North.  Sedrick Jones led Guilford with 18 points last week against the Belvidere Bucs.

Freeport (0-3) at Harlem (1-2)
Saturday, December 15

The Freeport Pretzels are the only winless team in the NIC-10, falling to Belvidere North last week.  The Pretzels have struggled to put up points all season, and have not put up more than 44 points in any of their losses.  Harlem (1-2) has faced two tough teams in Belvidere and Auburn , with their biggest loss coming to the Bucs (76-50) in week one.  Harlem does have offensive weapons like Justin VanWambeke (who scored 26 points of the Huskies 50 points against Belvidere), but lacks consistency. Of Freeport’s two games this weekend, this one appears to be their best chance at a win.
