Underclassmen Look to Fill Shoes of Graduating Seniors

Last week we discussed the seniors that earned All-Conference honors last season and led their respected teams. This week, I have compiled a list of underclassmen (freshman-juniors) from a year ago that will be looked upon to lead their teams in the 2013-2014 season. Many of these athletes garnered All-Conference honors themselves but will need to fill the shoes of the seniors that moved on after graduation.

The future is bright for the Big Eight Conference and fans and scouts alike will have much to look forward to in the coming year thanks to these athletes.

Sun Prairie Cardinals

As the defending Big Eight Champions in both football and basketball, oh yeah, and baseball too, one may anticipate the Cardinals would take a bit of a step back in 2013-14. That couldn’t be further from the reality of Sun Prairie’s situation. Although the Cardinals loose 19 total players from a year ago off of the All-Conference teams (1st, 2nd, Honorable Mention) in all three sports combined, Sun Prairie heads into next season as the favorite once again.

Last season the Cardinals had an unbelievable year as a school: A state championship appearance in football, an extended run deep into the playoffs in basketball and back-to-back state championships in baseball. Though the success of the school is generally attributed to the senior class, these underclassmen deserve every bit of the acknowledgement for such a dominating performance a year ago.

The task of returning to the top is monumental, but once you have tasted success, failure is not an option for the returning All-Conference players from Sun Prairie.

Verona Wildcats

The Verona Wildcats also face an uphill climb as the school must replace 16 All-Conference performers from a year ago in the three major sports. Much of the talent from last season graduated but there are still a handful of athletes returning as Wildcats next season as Verona looks to capture a few more conference crowns.

Madison Memorial Spartans

Madison Memorial has always been a perennial power in the Big Eight and seems to reload every year. The football team may be the hardest team hit by the graduation “bug” but the Spartans will always field an ultra competitive squad. As for the basketball team, nine consecutive state tournament appearances and a handful of state championships really speak for themselves. Head coach Steve Collins has always and will always propel the Spartans to the upper echelon of basketball teams in the state of Wisconsin.

Riley Karns (Soph) Honorable Mention All-Conference selection

Sam Kimball (Jr) Honorable Mention All-Conference selection

Madison West Regents

The Regents had stellar seasons in all sports last year thanks in large part to the senior leadership by Alex Brown during both the football and baseball seasons. Brown was honored with a 1st Team All-Conference selection as quarterback of Madison West and also earned the Big Eight Player of the Year award during the baseball season as the Regents center fielder. Although the Regents loose one of the best athletes in the entire Big Eight, West may still compete for a number of conference titles.
