Week three was about big surprises and upsets in the NIC-10. This week, however, the focus was on statement wins from the conference’s top teams.
In the Game of the Week, the Harlem Huskies showed Belvidere North why they are still considered one of the dominant forces in the NIC-10, defeating the Blue Thunder 31-10.
Belvidere North had beaten the consistently tough Hononegah Indians 29-13 the week before, led by an outstanding performance by QB Jace Bankord (377 yards). Bankord still topped 300 yards on Friday against Harlem, but was 18 for 43 in his throwing attempts, with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Bankord’s comparatively quiet night can be credited to Harlem’s defense, and players like WR/DB Malik Lightfoot. Lightfoot shined at defensive back, covering Belvidere North receiver Kevin Tevebaugh, and neutralizing the threat of a big play between Bankord and Tevenbaugh. Lightfoot also intercepted Bankord to set up a 5-yard touchdown run by RB De Woods that put the Huskies up 21-3 in the third quarter.
For the Huskies offense, quarterback Tanner DiGiovanni turned in another solid performance. The senior quarterback was 11 for 15 for 142 yards and one touchdown. De Woods had 100 total yards and two touchdowns, including scoring on a 75-yard fake punt in the first possession of the game. Also scoring for the Huskies was senior WR Chris Hurtado (56 yards on 4 carries).
The win puts Harlem at 3-1 and under 4-0 Boylan in the standings. Belvidere North falls to 2-2 and joins the pileup in the middle of the conference; Belvidere, Hononegah and Auburn all sit with even records.
