NIC-10 Week 7 Preview

Game of the Week:

Hononegah (4-2) @ Harlem (5-1)
Last week: Hononegah 70 – Jefferson 14, Harlem 21 – Auburn 20
Last time they met: Hononegah 29 – Harlem 18

The Boylan Titans are on their way to another conference title and their eighth consecutive undefeated season.  But in recent years, the matchup of Harlem (5-1) and Hononegah (4-2) has become the game to watch in the NIC-10.  The winner has finished second in the conference the last seven years.

The standings look a little different than they did last season, with a surprising Guilford team sitting alongside Harlem at 5-1 (Guilford has yet to face either Harlem or Hononegah). Like Guilford, Harlem’s only loss came against Boylan in week three.  Hononegah, at 4-2, fell to Belvidere North the week after their own loss to Boylan.

While the Indians are not back to full strength since their plague of injuries in week two, including losing defensive back Adrian Marquez for the season, they have continued to look impressive in wins over Belvidere and Auburn.  Last week, the Indians set a school record for points scored in a 70-14 blowout of Jefferson.

Both Hononegah and Harlem have proven why they are once again two of the best teams in the NIC-10.  Going into this week’s game, there is not a clear favorite.  These are two physical teams, with good defenses, who do a lot of their work on the ground.  Hononegah had three players who topped 100 yards rushing last week;  Alex Martin (148 yards, 2 TDs), Jake ( 155 yards, 3 TDs), and Alec Dodd (112 yards, 2 TDs).

Harlem, however, is more likely to use their passing game.  When the two teams met last year, quarterback Justin VanWambeke threw for 222 yards, while Hononegah had only 12 yards passing.  This year, Huskies quarterback Tanner DiGiovani has been very accurate (69 - 102 for 866 yards) and can make big plays when he has the targets.  On the ground, Harlem has running back De Woods.  Woods ran for 117 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown in last week’s win against Auburn.  But the Huskies lost 65 yards on penalties last week.

Look for Hononegah to do what they do best against Harlem tonight; run the ball and keep Harlem's passing game under control.
