Stoughton 2-0 (5-1) at Whitewater 3-2 (3-3) - Game of the Week

7 p.m., Saturday, December 28th

This winter break non-conference matchup has the improving Whitewater Whippets team up against a very talented Stoughton Vikings team.  Whippets Head Coach Dan Gnatzig wanted to schedule a hard matchup before the second half of the season starts to get his team more experience.  The Whippets have been on a roll lately winning their last two games after dropping three straight, their latest win was against Clinton, 45-43.  Their two star players that have come up big in these last two games are Sam Fuller and Scott Gorsuch, both averaging 10 ppg.  The success from this team comes in the fourth quarter, where they have outscored their opponents 30-17 in their latest wins.  Gorsuch led the team with 12 points in the fourth quarter last week in their win over Clinton.  That win put their conference record at 3-2 which sits them very comfortably for a run at second place in the conference.  The Whippets will have to be on their game this Saturday though as they face a Vikings team, who are undefeated in their conference, winning by an average of 15 points per game.  The Vikings are led by surging junior 6’8 Nick McGlynn, as a sophomore he averaged 16 ppg and took his team to the Division 2 title game.  This year McGlynn is averaging 17 ppg for the Vikings and has been the leading scorer in all of their wins this year.  His running mate is 6’2 guard Paul Rosowski, averaging 12 ppg and 10 rpg.  The Vikings like to push the tempo on offense so it will be key for the Whippets to get back on defense as quickly as possible.  I think that the Vikings will be too much for the Whippets to handle and this game could be over before halftime.  I predict this game will be over sooner than later, the Vikings will get the win 66-48 over the Whippets.

Gillett 2-3 (2-5) at Palmyra-Eagle 1-4 (2-5)

7 p.m., Friday, December 27th

This winter break matchup isn’t one that is going to be at the top of your basketball watch list but two teams that are looking to get on the right track.  Palmyra-Eagle would love to forget their loss last week against Edgerton, that’s because they only scored 18 points.  The final score of last weeks game was 62-18, dropping Palmyra to the bottom of the Rock Valley standings.  We knew that this would be a tough year for them after losing all three of their top scorers to graduation last year.  Nate Behr and Ryan Dahms are the leaders of this young Palmyra team.  Behr is averaging 11 ppg and Dahms 7 ppg, the few bright spots on the team that have had a disappointing year so far.  Their last win came three weeks ago with a 44-43 win over struggling Brodhead.  Palmyra will be facing a team in Gillett that also is looking for something to salvage this season.  Their last win also came three weeks ago and would like to start out the new year on a winning note.  The leading scorers for Gillett are Dylan Roberts (12 ppg) and Jake Kasten (9 ppg), Roberts had a team high 18 points in their loss last week to Aquinas.  This game should be low scoring and will probably be close until the fourth quarter.  Dylan Roberts of Gillett is a big time scorer so Palmyra will need to lock down their defense on him.  Though in the Christmas spirit I will predict that Palmyra Eagle will get the close win over Gillett.  Giving them a much needed win and something for the team to look positively at heading into the second half of the season.  Palmyra-Eagle will be Gillett 48-45.
